Rúa da Acibechería
Rúa da Acibechería
This is the street where all jet workshops and shops were located. Jet is an enigmatic black stone desired by pilgrims, who purchased it in the shape of scallop shells, St. James images, rosaries, and amulets. It is still preserving this tradition.
Merchants and changers
This is the most jubilee street of the city. It offered and offers the emotion of the first sight of the Cathedral’s doors to pilgrims going on the French Way. It also offered them all type of services as on the Middle Ages this street was completely devoted to pilgrims.
Emblems and souvenirs,-mainly made of jet- clothing and leather objects –belts, hats, bags, etc.- were sold here, foreign currency was exchanged and all type of inns were offered aloud.
Hospital de Jerusalén and the Armenian
It was also a very hospitable street. The example is the side street Jerusalén. Its name is owed to a hospital for eastern pilgrims who where those coming from really far away. It was located at the angle between this street and the Acibechería. It gave shelter to pilgrims coming from Palestine and Armenia, the latter is one of the first Christian countries in the world.
Mass based on eastern rituals, such as the Armenian, were given at its chapel. It belonged to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and to the Cathedral. It is believed that it lasted until the XVI century.
